South Korean gaming powerhouse Krafton has revealed its plans to invest a whopping $150 million (₹1242 Crores) into Indian gaming and interactive entertainment startups over the next 2-3 years. This announcement comes on the heels of Krafton’s prior investments totaling approximately $140 million across 11 Indian startups since 2021, reaffirming the company’s keen interest in fostering the burgeoning startup ecosystem in the country.
Krafton’s Big Bet: Transforming Indian Gaming Startups
Krafton has been a prominent supporter of homegrown gaming enterprises. Prominent companies like NODWIN Gaming and Loco have received investment from Krafton. Additionally, mobile gaming companies Nautilus Mobile and Lila Games. In a nod to diverse content platforms, Krafton’s backing also extends to Indian audio hub Kuku FM and the indigenous language storytelling app Pratilipi.
CEO Sean Hyunil Sohn stands at the forefront of Krafton’s ambitious endeavor. Sohn’s vision encompasses nurturing the Indian startup realm across various domains – from technology and gaming to content creation. The company focuses on startups at Series-A to Series-B stages and has now extended this strategy to include creator economy.
Sohn’s confidence in India’s potential as a global tech and gaming contender is unwavering. The earmarked $150 million investment will catalyze India’s growth in these spheres. At the heart of Krafton’s narrative is its renowned product – Krafton’s Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI). Emerging triumphant from a 10-month ban, the popular mobile game underwent a relaunch in May. The initial ban was imposed in concerns over data-sharing and mining in China.
