The DLSSG-To-FSR3 mod offers frame generation for older Nvidia GPUs. New benchmarks paint a positive picture in practical use
At the end of last year, GPU manufacturer AMD published the source code for the FSR 3 feature (FidelityFX Super Resolution), which also includes the Fluid Motion Frames intermediate image calculation, among other things.
This uses artificial intelligence to calculate completely new images in games in order to improve performance. In the case of Nvidia’s Frame Generation counterpart, which is often referred to as DLSS 3, however, a current RTX 4000 graphics card is required for this.
Where there is public source code, modders are not far away either – accordingly, with “DLSSG-To-FSR3- a first solution appeared shortly afterwards, which overcomes this restriction to a certain extent via the detour using AMD’s FSR technology.
So owners of Nvidia’s RTX-2000 and RTX-3000 GPUs, among others, can also benefit from the frame generation. Owners of AMD graphics cards will also be pleased, as significantly more titles natively support DLSS 3 than FSR 3.
The mod has now been subjected to a first major benchmark by Digital Foundry and shows promising results.
These are the benchmarks
In the video linked below, Digital Foundry tested the DLSSG-To-FSR3 mod using an Nvidia Geforce RTX 3080 and an AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor
With regard to the settings, presets in 1440p resolution with full ray tracing were used, for example in Cyberpunk 2077.
The result is impressive, at least in terms of frame rate. For example, an average improvement of 67 percent was recorded with the modified files in the aforementioned Cyberpunk 2077 compared to the regular DLSS performance preset.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales was also subjected to a comparative test in this way and was also able to shine with around two thirds more frames per second. Both games cracked the three-digit FPS mark in places, meaning that the mod has a right to exist, especially as a free solution.
There are still problems: However, not all that brings more FPS is gold. When using the modification files, there are more graphical artifacts that do not occur with regular FSR 3, or at least much less frequently.
As can be seen from the comments on the YouTube video, these artifacts seem to come primarily from post-processing effects that DLSSG-To-FSR3 doesn’t really want to deal with.
After all, most of these can be switched off either in the options or the .ini files of the respective game. In Alan Wake 2, for example, it is sufficient to set the “bLensDistortion” parameter to “false” to get rid of some of the ghosting effects.
Where can you find the mod? The necessary files to use DLSSG-To-FSR3 can be found on the portal (Nexusmods) for download. After installation, you must copy the .dll files contained into the respective directory of the desired game
However, you should not use the modification in multiplayer games: As the developers also warn on the Nexusmods page, modifying DLL files is undesired by most games and will result in a ban.
