Mortal Kombat 1 is one of the hottest new fighting games. It’s had a long journey to release but we finally know everything that’s coming when MK 1 finally releases in September. One feature that seems to be missing at launch though is Mortal Kombat 1 crossplay.
MK 1 Crossplay would be a feature that lets players join together on matches across platforms. It’s a feature which has often become standard in games. It allows players to compete against each other no matter what platform they’re on. Does Mortal Kombat 1 have crossplay though? Netherrealm Studios has clarified how it’s going to work and if it’ll be there at launch. There are a few disappointments if you’re hoping to play across platforms from day one.
Mortal Kombat 1 Crossplay
MK 1 is planned to launch on all the major platforms, but without crossplay. The developers have given an update about Mortal Kombat crossplay, or Kross-play as it has playfully been termed. They’ve specified that the game isn’t getting it at launch. Players will be locked onto their own platforms for the early days of the game.
Most of the biggest fighting games at the moment offer crossplay in one form or another. At least those available on different platforms. Mortal Kombat 1 won’t be able to facilitate crossplay at the very start though.
What exactly is crossplay though? It’s a feature where you can play with friends on any platform. Since Mortal Kombat 1 is coming out on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC, the player base is spread out. Crossplay would allow you to fight someone on any of these platforms even if you don’t share the same system. Although it won’t be here at launch at least.
There are some reasons MK 1 crossplay is a bit more complicated. Other fighters with crossplay have fewer major differences between platforms. How the PS5 and Switch versions of the games are going to play together seems tricky, at least from a performance standpoint. Although fans shouldn’t give up hope entirely, we might be getting crossplay further down the line.
Is Crossplay Coming?
Mortal Kombat 1 crossplay won’t be here at launch, but it might be coming later. The developers have said they’re still working on crossplay to let console and PC players compete together. The final crossplay for the title hasn’t been confirmed for every platform yet. The switch version isn’t guaranteed to be playable on other platforms. However, for most consoles and PC, it seems likely that we’ll get this eventually.
Developers behind the game haven’t made a timetable clear for when we’re getting MK 1 crossplay. It could come within the first update or two, or it could take the entire opening period of the game to get updated. Hopefully, the Mortal Kombat 1 crossplay update comes sooner rather than later though. It’s worth keeping an eye on fighting game news to see when the update hits. It’s a fun feature that’s helped to make some of the other major fighting games much more accessible.
