Handheld console and smartwatch in one, the Retro Watch

If you find current smartwatches too boring and are a fan of retro consoles, then you might be interested in the new Retro Watch.

This is a retro handheld console that can be worn on the wrist and looks like a Gameboy Advance SP. The device is not only suitable for playing games, but also as a smartwatch

Smartwatch and handheld in one

The Retro Watch was recently successfully funded via a (crowdfunding campaign) and is due to be released this year.

This is a mixture of handheld console and smartwatch. Visually, the device is very reminiscent of the Gameboy Advance SP. In contrast to this, however, the Retro Watch is significantly smaller and has a different button layout.

(Of course, Doom also runs on the device. (Image: Retro Watch via Kickstarter))

The handheld uses an FPGA chip to replicate the hardware architecture of old systems – similar to the Analogue Pocket.

The highlight: when you close the Retro Watch, a second display is revealed on the outside, turning the handheld into a functioning smartwatch. It also connects to your cell phone via Bluetooth, for example to send and receive messages.

(We don’t believe that playing on the wrist is particularly ergonomic. You’re supposed to be able to detach it from the band with a twisting motion. (Image: Retro Watch via Kickstarter))

Because of its size, however, playing does not seem particularly ergonomic. In addition, 64-bit gaming should be possible on the Retro Watch at the very most

Inside the smartwatch handheld hybrid is an ARM Cortex M33 with 160 MHz, with two energy-saving cores and 1.5 MB of integrated RAM. There is also a further 8 MB RAM from an external chip / module.

Price and availability: The Retro Watch can be reserved via the Kickstarter campaign and will be shipped to the first backers in November this year. The price starts at 180 US dollars. Shipping will be worldwide

The decision to fund a Kickstarter project in order to be among the first must be made by each individual. Sometimes patience pays off in the end.
