Din Djarin and Grogu are returning for their own Star Wars movie! Jon Favreau is set to direct, while a theatrical release may not be too long in coming

Disney and Lucasfilm have officially announced a new Star Wars movie: The Mandalorian & Grogu is (unsurprisingly) about the popular duo, whose adventures already span a three-season TV series on Disney Plus.

This is known about The Mandalorian & Grogu

An old acquaintance is taking over as director: Jon Favreau (Iron Man, The Lion King) has previously worked closely with new Lucasfilm CCO Dave Filoni on The Mandalorian. Now Favreau is directing the major cinema project about Din Djarin and Baby Yoda

When will The Mandalorian & Grogu start?  A release date for the new Star Wars film is currently unknown. However, we do at least know that production is set to begin in 2024. This means that a cinema release in 2026 cannot be ruled out; 2025 would probably be too ambitious.

Not the only Mandalorian film: Incidentally, the announcement does not refer to the planned feature film by Dave Filoni, which is to be understood as the grand finale of his Star Wars series (such as The Mandalorian, Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett). The newly announced project by Jon Favreau is his own film.

If you want to refresh your memories of The Mandalorian now, perhaps the official series recap will help you:

These two questions remain unanswered

Is a 4th season of The Mandalorian coming?  Back in February 2023 Jon Favreau hinted that he had finished writing a new season of The Mandalorian. Since then, there have been conflicting reports as to whether the fourth season of the Star Wars series will be made into a feature film or not.

The announcement of The Mandalorian & Grogu does not answer this question so far. It’s very possible that the feature film is being developed alongside – or has replaced – a new season. Vague hints from actress Katee Sackhoff (Bo-Katan Kryce) and stuntman Brendan Wayne have at least suggested that a fourth season is currently being worked on.

Reports from Deadline and Variety imply that the feature film is being made alongside season 4.

Is Pedro Pascal returning as Din Djarin? It is not clear from the announcement whether Pedro Pascal will continue to appear as the titular Mandalorian in the Star Wars film. According to reports, Pascal has hardly ever appeared in front of the camera, especially in the final episodes of the TV series to date.

Pedro Pascal himself described his work for The Mandalorian to THR primarily as a voice-over gig, which is probably also due to his busy schedule. For example, his commitment to the HBO series for The Last of Us has also caused conflicts, and Pascal is also set to take on a key role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a new superhero.

So it remains to be seen whether Pedro Pascal will return for The Mandalorian – whether in front of the camera or just in the sound booth. On Instagram the actor responded to the anticipation quite enthusiastically, which at least gives us hope.

By the way: In the same breath as the announcement, a second season for the Ahsoka series was officially confirmed. It has been an open secret for several weeks that this is coming. But now the production has finally been announced by Disney and Lucasfilm

What do you think of the announcement of The Mandalorian & Grogu: Are you looking forward to the new Star Wars film or could you do without it with a clear conscience? Would you also welcome a fourth season of the Star Wars series at the same time? Let us know in the comments – we’d love to hear your opinion!
