Once Human impressed us last year with its ambitious plans. Now we can try out the MMO for the first time

The Day Before may have failed more resoundingly than almost any other game, but luckily there are other promising games out there that want to offer similar scenarios. One of them is Once Human, a survival MMO from a relatively unknown developer that is currently showing its potential in a closed beta phase.

What is Once Human?

The post-apocalyptic open world of the MMO confronts us with numerous terrifying monsters created from humans by the influence of an extraterrestrial being. We are immune to the influence of the so-called stardust and can even become stronger as a result.

But what exactly do we actually do in the survival MMO?  We summarize the most important gameplay elements and features for you:

Survival: We don’t just have to fight hunger and thirst to avoid debuffs. Our mental health also suffers from contact with monsters and dangerous areas, which we restore by resting, for example.

Crafting and base building: We collect resources and blueprints to create or improve weapons and equipment. We can also build and furnish houses using a modular construction system. We can save our bases as a blueprint or move them in one piece to another location on the map.

Weapons and combat: We can use firearms such as pistols, rifles or heavy miniguns, as well as melee weapons. We face weaker opponents, such as zombie-like creatures, as well as huge bosses with several phases.

Fortresses: In the open world, numerous large building complexes are waiting to be explored by us. Here we have to complete certain tasks, such as defeating enemies and discovering treasures, in order to collect additional rewards.

Quests and story: There will apparently also be story elements. We find out what is behind the stardust and meet various NPC factions. We also get smaller quests here.

Events and bosses: While exploring, we can also encounter world events and fixed or wandering bosses.

Coop and PvP: When exploring the world, other players are usually our allies. We can only fight against them in special PvP zones. Later, there will probably also be dedicated PvP servers that will allow us to attack player bases.

What the world and monsters of Once Human look like can be seen in the gameplay trailer:

Is Once Human a good game? Of course, it’s impossible to say for sure at this stage. Initial reactions to Once Human are often positive, even if there is a certain amount of skepticism due to the debacle surrounding The Day Before. Many players are also pleased that (a major update) brought numerous improvements to the beta.

Due to the large number of players, the developers even had to decide to close the previously open beta. However, those who (complete a survey) still have a chance to get a key. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait until the planned release in the third quarter of 2024

What do you think of Once Human? Are you curious about the survival MMO, or are you pretty skeptical after the scandal surrounding The Day Before? Would you try out the game’s beta if you got the chance? Or have you perhaps even been able to test the game? How was your experience? Let us know in the comments!
