As part of a full day of Japanese centred news on the 30th of October, the Digimon TCG saw plenty of revealed updates.
In addition to revealing the first three colored card to the game, a “new project” was teased. The English twitter account would mirror an English version of a brand new trailer on 31st. The trailer makes various references to online thematic, such as “full dive” and “metaverse”. This has lead many to believe that this was the teasing of an Official Digimon Simulator. Showcasing a new purple eyed Digimon amongst scattered Digimon trading cards, the new project is focussed on the TCG.
Playing Digimon Digitally
The project, currently “Digimon [Redacted]” would be the first update on an official Digimon simulator. A year prior, an official Digimon livestream showed early progress on a digital client for the Digimon TCG. At the time of writing, the only official Digimon simulator is the tutorial app. As the name implies, its an introduction match to get to grips with the basic systems of the Digimon TCG. Other than the app and this early look into the simulator in late 2021, there hasn’t been any buzz on an online client. Outside of shutting down some fan made simulators, the only approved Bandai way to play online is via webcams.
Hope? or Cope?
It is possible that, instead, the trailer is for a Digimon TCG Video Game. It wouldn’t be the first. Digimon Digital Card Battle and Digimon World: Digital Card Battle from 2000 and 1999 respectively were Digital versions of the Digimon Card Game “Digi-Card Battle”. Similar to most modern Yu-Gi-Oh! releases, or CardFight Vanguard’s “Dear Days”, this new Digimon TCG project could be a standalone Digimon Video Game. Even if so, it would likely support online play.
