The PUBG Mobile esports ecosystem is set to undergo a major revamp in 2024. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the esports team of the game revealed that the tournament will now step away from the PUBG Mobile Pro Leagues (PMPLs) and will instead be replacing them with the PUBG Mobile Super Leagues (PMSL). The latter are set to be offline tournaments.

What does this mean for PUBG Mobile esports?

If you are confused about what this means for the esports ecosystem of the game, here’s your answer. The PMSL was first launched earlier this year for the SEA region exclusively. This was a semi-franchised league in which 15 slots were given to partnered teams. Five slots, on the other hand, were awarded to teams through open qualifiers. Tencent had said that it would be testing this format and could be bringing it to more regions soon.

It seems that the test has proved to be a success and the PMSL will now be implemented across all regions. This means that fans will now be treated to more offline action throughout the year as the PMSL will be LAN events. Additionally, some teams will likely guarantee slots in the events while there will be some level of open qualifiers to give aspiring pros a chance as well.

While it’s unclear what regions the PMSL will happen in, it could be the same as the major PMPL Championship regions, which are the MEA, Americas, Europe, and South Asia.

“This transformation aims to provide more content, enhance competitive integrity, and ensure stability for the teams in our ecosystem,” Tencent said in its statement.

The company also added that more details will be revealed during the PMGC 2023 Grand Finals. The Finals are set to happen from Dec. 8 to 10 in Istanbul, Turkey.

Not the first time Tencent has tried to bring regional LAN leagues

This isn’t the first time Tencent has tried to bring regional LAN tournaments for its PUBG Mobile ecosystem. In fact, in 2020, the company announced its intention to bring the PMPLs in an offline format. For this, Tencent even constructed a new esports studio in Katowice, Poland. This was supposed to hold events like World League (PMWL) 2020 and the PMPL Americas. It had further announced its intention of creating two similar studios in other regions of the world.

However, this plan had to be abandoned due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fans will now be getting their long-due regional offline tournaments in 2024, though.
