With season 13 coming to a close end and the Worlds 2023 finals happening this Sunday, Riot Games shared their thoughts on creating more experiences for fans going into 2024.
Riot introducing new ways to enhance the esports experiences in 2023 and 2024
At the Worlds Media Day that took place on November 15, Riot Games executives talked about the competition and its great success, both from a competitive standpoint and most importantly, from a viewership perspective. While we may see some tweaks to the format, it looks like Worlds will continue with the Swiss stage going forward.
This year, Riot also looked to add new ways to broaden the fan experience with the Worlds Unlocked package, a combination of physical goodies and enhanced experiences. The bundles were available in two ways, one with the digital edition, and the other with the Worlds 2023 Unlocked Collector’s Edition, which included exclusive Worlds 2023 merch on top of everything offered in the digital package. It also gave fans exclusive access to online events such as Media Day, which had NewJeans and HEARTSTEEL participating and it was initially exclusive to media and influencers.

According to John Needham, President of Esports at Riot Games, the package was well received, especially in North America and Europe. And by riding that wave, Riot aims to extend other experiences to Worlds 2024, with more ways to create revenues for League of Legends teams, which will be guaranteed 50% of the revenue for more stability and earn a percentage of esports content and prize pools from international tournaments.
Riot also worked to create a fan fest in South Korea for the Worlds Finals, including a concert the day before the final. After the Covid-19 pandemic which halted most offline events, this is set to be the most spectacular event LoL esports has seen in years.
