League of Legends MMO – A New Direction

Riot Tryndamere gave a public update on X, assuring that the team is still working on the project. That said, there are some important and not-so-great news.

The game developer explained that Riot decided to reset the direction of the project. “The initial vision just wasn’t different enough from what you can play today,” he claimed, saying that they need to do something that truly feels like a “significant revolution of the genre”.

To make it work, Tryndamere announced Fabrice “Faburisu” Condominas as the new Executive Producer of the MMO, who previously led projects at BioWare and most importantly, Electronic Arts. Faburisu commented on the announcement on his own personal X account:

Excited and humbled to join this incredibly talented team and take on the huge responsibility of leading a game with such high expectations. Developing an MMO is a monumental undertaking, and while I am eager to dive into the work, I am also mindful of the patience and perseverance it will require. The road ahead is long, and we are still in the first few miles of a marathon. But I’m confident in our journey and excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. Thank you for your trust, support, and passion. Here’s to the journey ahead.

Tryndamere continued by saying that they have been building key components of the technical foundation over the last year, with Vijay Thakkar continuing as the Technical Director for the game.

The bad news

While having new people on board can be a great addition, here comes the issue. Riot’s strategic pivot means that the team is set to “go dark” for some time. Tryndamere mentioned it could be “several years”, which means that the League of Legends MMO won’t be coming any time soon. It will be far off from what some speculated to be released at the end of 2025 or the start of 2026.

Initially announced in 2020, this will further delay the game’s release, to the disappointment of some fans. At this point, though, there is no other choice than to just wait and hope that Riot can surprise us with a banger of a game. Unfortunately, we won’t know when that will be coming for another while.
