2023 has been a huge year for fighting games, we’ve seen major new releases like Street Fighter 6 plus tons of titles getting closer to release like new Mortal Kombat and Tekken games. Some older titles are proving they have plenty of life left in them though, including one of the better titles from SNK’s recent releases. An older game in the developer’s catalogue will be receiving a major upgrade, with a Samurai Shodown rollback netcode update getting announced.
Rollback netcode updates are currently being rolled out to quite a few older games that are still played as fighting game esports. It’s not just the biggest new releases that get the most modern online play anymore. We’ve now got a good idea of when the new Samurai Shodown update with the level up for online will be coming to the game.
Samurai Shodown Rollback Netcode Update is Coming
SNK has detailed in full their plans to bring rollback netcode to Samurai Shodown. What is rollback netcode though? It’s a different way of handling online gameplay for fighters. The game will perform inputs from players instantly with this approach, rather than working on a delay. It’s a system for online player that can get things working nearly as well as in-person games. While most of the biggest fighting games in 2023 have something like this, it’s increasingly being added to older titles too.
Samurai Shodown initially tested the rollback netcode update across some beta periods. This has now completed though! It looks like we’re going to be getting a true rollback netcode update in the next patch. This is likely to come around September. It’ll arrive with the next update to the game and instantly improve the quality of online play for fighters.

Samurai Shodown rollback netode update brings it in line with more modern games. Other older fighters are still waiting on the feature though. Such as the FighterZ rollback netcode update which has been pushed back a few times. SNK is planning the release of a few new titles soon. So it’s great to see unique older titles like this still getting improvements.
