Sony has shocked the gaming world by revealing the PlayStation 5 Slim – both the standard and Digital Editions – out of nowhere. An announcement was recently published on Twitter and on PlayStation’s blog to showcase the new and improved PlayStation 5 Slim units in all their shrunken glory, and nobody saw it coming. It’s launching in the very near future – ready for the holiday season – but it doesn’t end there.
Delivering on some rumours, Sony has also created and is marketing an ‘attachable disc drive’ for the PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition. This is an optional add-on that means you’ll be able to outfit your Digital Edition PlayStation 5 Slim with disc capabilities at a later date if you want it. There are also a couple of extra accessories coming to flesh out the pot – but this shocking news really is something special from Sony.
PS5 Slim Launches Q4 2024
In a 20-second trailer, Sony showcased the upcoming PlayStation 5 Slim consoles:
Reportedly, the consoles are around 30% smaller than the existing PlayStation 5 units, but they’ve held tightly onto all their capabilities. It’s a move that many people saw coming, and for more than a year, rumours have been circulating regarding a PlayStation 5 Slim release. It’s the way that Sony has operated for generations:
PS2 became PS2 Slim
PS3 became PS3 Slim – then Super Slim
PS4 became PS4 Slim
And now we come full circle with the PS5 Slim.
Sony took the time to confirm the pricing model for the new PlayStation 5 Slim consoles:
US
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 499.99 USD
PS5 Digital Edition – 449.99 USD
EU
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 549.99 EUR
PS5 Digital Edition – 449.99 EUR
UK
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 479.99 GBP
PS5 Digital Edition – 389.99 GBP
JP
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 66,980 JPY (includes tax)
PS5 Digital Edition – 59,980 JPY (includes tax)
That attachable disc drive that I mentioned will be available to buy at a later date for 79.99 USD, 119.99 EURO, 99.99 GBP, or 11,980 JPY.

What’s Special About It?
Internally, nothing has changed with the PlayStation 5 Slim – it’s just smaller, sleeker, lighter, and the Digital Edition now has the optional disc drive attachment. There are a few extra bits, such as the vertical and horizontal stands (former sold separately) and a few cover plates for the console, but it’s the same old PlayStation 5 we’ve been enjoying for a few years, hardware-wise.
It’ll release first in North America at selected retailers, and then in the months that follow, it’ll launch globally. It’s a staggered rollout – but nobody really knows why. It’s expected to be a fast delivery, though – Sony has made countless references to this console arriving in perfect time for the upcoming holiday season.
What do you think, can you see yourself picking up a PlayStation 5 Slim or will you stick with your standard console?
