Between March 21 and March 24, the Miami Heretics-backed Major II will take place in the Call of Duty League. In the run-up to that event, teams are fighting to secure the best spots in the bracket before heading down to Miami to compete for a grand prize worth $150,000. This weekend, the New York Subliners proved that they’re determined to make a difference again this season, securing a perfect record by beating both Boston Breach and Atlanta FaZe.
It was a less-than-desirable finish for the Subliners at Major I, being kicked out of the tournament by the Carolina Royal Ravens. There’s now a sense of determination within the Subliners squad, and only clean wins are permitted going forward. At the top of the table for the qualifying stage, the Subliners boast a 4 – 0 record, closely followed by Toronto Ultra and OpTic Texas, who also have refused to drop a series so far.
Run It Back
Last year, the New York Subliners produced a remarkable record. The team swept two Major wins and secured the title at COD Champs in Las Vegas in the fastest Grand Final in Call of Duty history. This year, the competition seems hotter than ever, and every team has the potential to win big.
For instance, OpTic Texas pulled off a remarkable reverse sweep against Minnesota Rokkr this weekend. There were dire scenes lined up for OpTic, and it all came down to Rokkr choking during game three – a Control on Karachi. That gave OpTic Texas the opening to reverse sweep the series, with game four (Hardpoint) being a nail-biter with a final scoreline of 245 – 250 in Texas’ favour. Following the series, OpTic Texas’ players were speechless, unsure of exactly how they’d managed to pull it off.
As the New York Subliners laid waste to Atlanta FaZe and Toronto Ultra picked apart Vegas Legion, the Miami Heretics were off nursing their wounds. As the home series team for this Major, the Miami Heretics need to show up and represent their brand, but the squad has failed to secure any traction during this stage. So far, the Heretics have fallen against the LA Thieves, Vegas Legion, Atlanta FaZe, and Toronto Ultra, a mixed bag of both the top and bottom-most teams in the CDL standings.
There are still three weeks of qualifying matches to be played before we hit Major II in Miami. There’s plenty of time for the landscape to change, and with some intense match-ups on the horizon, there’s still a lot for these teams to play for.
