What is the PUBG Mobile Global Open (PMGO), the new esports tournament?

Why is a new tournament being formed?

The PUBG Mobile Global Open (PMGO) will be another global tournament in the 2024 esports roadmap for the game. James Yang, the director of PUBG Mobile global esports, delved into more regions behind the establishment of this new tournament.

Yang said that due to time zone differences, certain major regions like Brazil are unable to host a global tournament. This is a gap that Tencent will be bridging with the first season of the PMGO in 2024.

How to qualify?

Additionally, Tencent has made some huge changes to the 2024 esports season. The PMPLs have been replaced with the PUBG Mobile Super Leagues (PMSL) taking place across four regions globally. These will feature partnered teams with only a few slots for open and grassroots-level teams.

The PMGO, however, will present an opportunity for these teams to compete globally as well. Thus, the name has “Global Open” in it. There will be three ways to make it to the first season in Brazil which is as follows:

Invited teams: Top teams based on past performance will be invited.
Partnered teams: The partnered teams in the PMSL will also get an opportunity to compete in the tournament.
Local Qualifiers: There will be open-for-all qualifiers presenting a chance for new teams to compete in PUBG Mobile’s biggest stage.

PUBG Mobile Esports has now been operating for more than five years. As we 2024, it’s natural that Tencent is focusing on bringing in more partnered teams to grow the esports scene.

Thus, the PMGO comes as a welcome tournament which gives an opportunity for new teams to have a chance to compete in a global tournament.

Before that, the PMGC 2023 Grand Finals are all set to happen in Turkey from Dec. 8 to 10. The top 16 teams are fighting for the title of world champions and a share of the prize pool.
