On November 25, one of the most electrifying competitors in esports, Tyson ‘TenZ’ Ngo, revealed that he’s creating his own custom mouse. It’s a project that’s being handled with support from Prodigy Agency, which represents the 22-year-old VALORANT competitor. However, the reveal tanked somewhat, with TenZ announcing that pre-orders for the mouse would go live on November 27, but the mouse itself would remain a secret.
That’s right — TenZ wanted you to preorder a mouse that you couldn’t see in any way, shape, or form. It carries with it a price tag of $189.99, so it’s by no means a trivial thing. There were many who jumped at the chance to get on board as early as possible, as it was also revealed that only 20,000 mice would be available. Others were more sceptical, opting to question laying down $189 for something that they couldn’t even get a look at.
Needless to say, TenZ and his management team had to take control of the situation as more people started doubting the legitimacy of the promo.
‘I Genuinely Apologise’
In a lengthy statement published to Twitter just hours ago, TenZ spoke at length about the promotional event, the pre-order, and the mouse itself. He went so far as to release a conceptual image of the mouse, showing the ‘Founder’s Edition’ on a hastily put-together document. It was stressed that the expected weight of the mouse is 50g, and the dimensions were flashed up on the screen, but apart from that, we don’t know the technical specifications of the mouse.
Here’s what TenZ said on Twitter:
‘First off I just want to genuinely apologize on the latest launch of my new mouse. I completely understand the negative comments that are being made towards the project, and everything is completely warranted. This model for making a mouse from scratch and releasing pre-orders before the mouse is even finished has never been done before, and it was super ambitious.’
He explained that his management team believed it would be ‘an interesting idea’ to reveal each part of the mouse step-by-step. It’s how Dr Disrespect is handling his DEADROP game, which is being slowly revealed in slices over time as the game becomes more developed. TenZ said that pre-orders would be frozen for the time being and that this wasn’t being done as a ‘quick cash grab’.
This news comes a little more than a year after a promotional event between TenZ and Finalmouse led to a $7.6 million collaboration effort surfacing. There was a ‘Finalmouse Starlight Pro’ mouse released under the name ‘TenZ’ that sold out within hours, with 40,000 pieces flying off the digital shelves. Coincidentally, the mouse also had a price tag of $189.99.
It isn’t yet known when TenZ’s mouse will be available to pre-order again.
