There are mere weeks left before the Call of Duty League 2024 season kicks off, and organisations are busy getting their ducks in a row. In the last few days, we’ve seen rosters confirmed, teams promoted, and have seen players stepping up their scrims and COD-related streams online. Recently, Las Vegas Legion took to social media to reveal its roster, using generative AI to promote the team – which drew immediate backlash from the Call of Duty community.
It was instant, but that was mostly because the use of generative AI in the reveal was glaringly obvious. Even the Vegas Legion players made quips against the post, which has since generated more than 1.2 million impressions on Twitter, but for all the wrong reasons.
‘Las Vegas Legion From Wish’
Aside from the Los Angeles Guerrillas (which has been silent since the summer), the Las Vegas Legion was the last team to formally announce its roster. There were already whispers and murmurs concerning the team’s roster, but it was just hours ago that the organisation officially confirmed who will be flying the Legion flag in the CDL 2024 season. Here’s the post from Twitter:
For years, the Legion brand has been dragged through the Call of Duty League, almost consistently coming in at the bottom of the table during every season. It was once located in Paris, but then it relocated to Las Vegas for the 2022 season. It was a similar move made by the London Royal Ravens for the 2024 season, with the team moving over to become the Carolina Royal Ravens, thus removing the last EU-branded team from the CDL.

Talking of being dragged, the latest announcement from the Las Vegas Legion prompted rage-filled comments from the COD community on Twitter. One member of OpTic’s creative team wrote:
‘Using AI to announce a team has gotta be up there with one of the laziest things I’ve ever seen’ – OpTic Create
Another user wrote:
‘have some shame using ai for a roster announcement is gross’ – varuna
In another post, one user made a good point about the number of editors in the community:
‘The roster is a W, but I cannot understand why you would use AI images for your players when there are so many talented GFX people in this community who would’ve KILLED for a chance to do this announcement’ – Sean Rogers
Attach, one of the most talented Call of Duty players revealed as part of the roster, made a tongue-in-cheek reference to what the generative AI had done to him:
Most organisations tend to create a full video to reveal their roster, but not the Las Vegas Legion. This has caused immediate concerns to surface as to the team’s investment in the Call of Duty League this season. It could be an indication of things yet to come, suggesting that low effort might be a theme as the season kicks off in early December.
