Assassin’s Creed Mirage is the next generation of the fifteen-year-old franchise. It’s a return to form – a drop back to the classic games that featured a smaller map, shorter story, and far fewer side activities. It’s still an ambitious game from Ubisoft, but it’s by no means to the scale of a Valhalla or an Odyssey, for example. With that in mind, where is Assassin’s Creed Mirage set, and will the new map have enough to keep players entertained enough to make it worthwhile?
It’s worth stressing that a large map doesn’t instantly make for a good game. There has been a lot of pushback from the community in recent years regarding these oversized Assassin’s Creed titles, with some players claiming that there’s simply too much content for them to realistically appreciate. So, where does Assassin’s Creed Mirage take place, and is it going to offer up a more manageable experience overall?
Let’s find out.
Where is Assassin’s Creed Mirage Set?
Assassin’s Creed Mirage is set in and around Baghdad, Iraq. It’s a city that’s split up into five regions and also incorporates Alamut, which is the Hidden Ones’ fortress in the game. It was also confirmed that outlying areas of Baghdad will also be featured in the game, meaning players can venture outside the city walls – but not by much. It’s an environment that measures up to a very small portion of the map from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Origins, or Odyssey, but it’s by no means a weaker one.
For instance, it’s comparable to Assassin’s Creed Unity’s Paris or Syndicate’s London – and they were very entertaining, memorable games. Here are the five regions that the city of Baghdad is separated into in Assassin’s Creed Mirage:
The Round City, which sits at the heart of Baghdad
Trade District, which is focused on commerce
Karkh, the industrial soul of the city that includes a sizeable bazaar
Science District, a region dedicated to education
Military District, the most challenging region of Baghdad
Fortunately, exploring these regions in Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be much more enjoyable thanks to the History of Baghdad side mode that Ubisoft is including with the game. With this mode, players will be rewarded for actively exploring historic locations, soaking up knowledge about the culture, history, politics, law, and religion of the era. It’s a way to learn more and earn more, as completing the passive side mode will reward the player with in-game goodies.

Can Players Leave Baghdad in Assassin’s Creed Mirage?
So, if you’ve been wondering, ‘Where is Assassin’s Creed Mirage set?’, we hope that’s answered your question. But that’s not the only question that prospective players are asking.
For instance, many are curious as to whether they can leave Baghdad in Assassin’s Creed Mirage. It’s a topic we’ve just touched upon, but at present, we don’t know too much about the concept. It has been confirmed that players will be able to explore the more wild areas outside of Baghdad, but it’s suggested that they won’t be travelling very far.
If we look at ancient maps of Baghdad – which Assassin’s Creed Mirage is based on – we see a dense city surrounding the River Tigris, but outside of it, there isn’t much to talk about. There simply isn’t anything that close to the city that players would want to explore, even if they could venture further from Baghdad itself.
There’s no issue here, though. If the early game trailers are anything to go by, we’ll have plenty of content to keep us entertained in the city when Assassin’s Creed Mirage is released on October 12th, 2023.

Will DLC Ever Take Us Outside The City?
It’ll be interesting to see if any sizeable expansions are released for Assassin’s Creed Mirage. It has been stressed that – at the moment – there are no plans for DLC for Assassin’s Creed Mirage, but that’s because it was basically a DLC itself, once upon a time. It was expanded on and made much more ambitious – so much so that Ubisoft decided to make it a standalone release. It’s a great expansion to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla in that it reveals the origins of Basim, but it’s not likely to have any sizeable post-launch DLCs.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as for some users, it means that there’s finally another ‘one and done’ game in the Assassin’s Creed series. There are no costly bundles to purchase, no season pass to own, and no extra releases to invest in – it’s just the base game, and that’s honestly just fine.
