Assassin’s Creed has been an epic, open-world-based franchise since 2007. It can be argued that it’s best known for its single-player adventures, which can take the player hundreds of hours to fully complete, in some cases. But what about the opportunities to play Assassin’s Creed with friends – do they exist? In this guide, we’re taking a close look at the series and diving into an all-important question: ‘Which Assassin’s Creed is multiplayer?’

From storming a Templar stronghold to running wild across the rooftops, there are plenty of things that we’d love to do with our friends in Assassin’s Creed. Have we ever had these opportunities presented to us during the game’s near-twenty-year history? Read on, and let’s find out which Assassin’s Creed is multiplayer.

Are Any Assassin’s Creed Games Multiplayer?

It wasn’t ever a priority for Ubisoft, as the franchise lends itself much more effectively to a single-player campaign. However, that doesn’t mean that the developer and publisher hasn’t fused some multiplayer mechanics into its games over the years. It all started with Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood in 2010, which was the first Assassin’s Creed game with multiplayer mechanics. What would become known as the ‘traditional’ AC multiplayer experience surfaced for the first time ever in this game.

Essentially, Assassin’s Creed multiplayer modes were designed to resemble a digital training program that existed inside the Animus decks that were so prevalent in the series. In these modes, players would typically assume the role of either a Templar or an Assassin, entering one of several environments and trying to eliminate the other in a timely fashion. There were mechanics taken from the game such as stealth features, parkour, and assassinations, but they weren’t ever dramatically popular modes.

Despite that fact, the traditional Assassin’s Creed multiplayer formula rolled over into a series of games:

Assassin’s Creed Revelations
Assassin’s Creed III
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

But it didn’t end there.

There was one game in the history of the entire franchise that was a cooperative title: Assassin’s Creed Unity. It was the first and last cooperative title to surface in the series, and it admittedly offered up quite an enjoyable platform. In Unity, players assumed control of a series of characters, each of them customisable, and they’d run around Paris during the French Revolution, completing various preset missions as they saw fit.

It was firmly embedded into the core of the gameplay, giving players rewards that they could farm to purchase single-player items. There were challenges and achievements tied to the multiplayer modes, and the content contained within them was available therein on an exclusive basis.

When Assassin’s Creed Unity was released, it was extremely broken and buggy – to the point where some considered it unplayable. It’s much better by now, but it marred the multiplayer experience to no end, with some players being completely unable to even link up with their friends. When they did manage to get a game together, it was quite the experience, as it was something nobody had ever seen before in the history of Assassin’s Creed.

So, if you’re ever wondering, which Assassin’s Creed is multiplayer, you’ve got a selection.

Traditional Multiplayer: Brotherhood, Revelations, III, Black Flag
Cooperative Multiplayer: Unity

Sadly, we can’t confirm which of these games – if any – still have an active online community. One day, things will improve – it’s common knowledge that Ubisoft has multiplayer-exclusive Assassin’s Creed games in development!
